The UK’s food minister is feeling a little cheesed off that Britain’s food export market is not quite reaching its potential and has offered a simple solution.

Jim Paice believes the British food industry should produce more cheeses to sell to the worldwide market, the BBC reports.

Speaking on what is World Milk Day (June 1st), the foodie revealed that UK imports of dairy products total £2.3 billion annually, while the export market rakes in just £900m.

This is despite the UK boasting, what Mr Paice coined, a number of "iconic" cheeses. In fact, Britain produces more than 700 varieties, compared to the 400 made in France.

"We now need to help the dairy industry invest in processing, so that we can become a net exporter of all dairy products and send Britain’s iconic cheeses and other dairy products to the world," he told the news provider.

Boosting Britain’s home productions could lead to increased investment and employment and would provide welcome business at a time when firms such as Cadbury’s have been subject to overseas takeovers.
