Britain’s manufacturing sector continued to grow at its fastest pace in 16 years, new figures show.

According to the latest results of the CIPS/Markit purchasing managers index (PMI) the UK’s PMI result came in at 58.0 in May 2010, showing a notable improvement on the forecasted return of 57.8.

The PMI figure has been above the 50 mark, which signals expansion, since July 2009.

By contrast, the survey also showed that manufacturing across the eurozone nations had started to slow down, as a possible consequence in the devaluation of the currency.

One such area of the British industry that has seen significant gains is the food manufacturing and processing sector, including confectionary and baking, in which many firms have seen profits soar.

Recently companies including Greggs, Warburton’s and Lees Foods have all posted healthy pre-tax profits for 2009, with the current year looking equally as fruitful.
