The conveyor belts will need to be switched on at waste handling facilities in Plymouth as plans to divert six tonnes of rubbish from landfill each week have been announced.
In a bid to boost the city’s recycling rate and reduce its environmental impact, Plymouth City Centre Company is to offer a free waste collection service to local retailers, the BBC reports.
The initiative forms part of a five-year business plan that will see items such as paper and card collected from firms in the business district.
Materials will then be taken to the region’s main recycling centres where they will be passed along the conveyors and given a new lease of life.
"Our new recycling scheme for retailers will help both financially and environmentally," Clint Jones, Plymouth city centre manager told the news provider.
He hailed it as a "win-win" situation for everyone, as it could lead to a raft of business for those in the waste handling sector.
