One of Europe’s leading manufacturers of sweet bakery products, The Real Good Food Company, has made a positive start to the financial year.

Speaking at the firm’s Annual General Meeting today (June 3rd), Chairman Pieter Totte revealed that "growth in volumes and profitability has been well in excess of our expectations".

He said the strong performance had been driven by growth at its subsidiary Renshaws, the baking ingredients business, as well as continued progress at Hayden’s, the company’s bakery products arm.

"The Group has made a very good start to its financial year, and has achieved the goals set by the Board on working capital and profitability," commented Mr Totte.

"Results for the first four months of the current year are above expectations."

The firm’s success is somewhat testament to the strength and resilience of the UK food industry, despite a wider economic slowdown.

Justin King, chairman of supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, has previously stated that the future of Britain lies in the hand of its burgeoning food sector.
