Following more than two years of consultation, a major new waste-to-energy facility has been given the green light.

The Pond Green Energy Park, which is being developed by Hamilton-based Banks Developments in partnership with West Lothian firm Scotwaste, will be Scotland’s largest anaerobic digestion plant, the Scotsman reports.

Once operational, the plant will have the capacity to provide more than 7,000 homes with electricity and an additional 2,000 with heat power.

It will feature all the relevant waste-to-energy machinery, such as heavy-duty conveyors and conveyor belts.

Colin Anderson, managing director of Banks Property Development, said planning permission, which is a "landmark" in the drive to deliver Scotland’s waste targets.

"Pond Green Energy Park provides West Lothian and the wider central belt with a local solution to its own waste, as well as delivering renewable energy," he told the news provider.
