Britain’s manufacturers look to be leaving the dark days of the recession behind as confidence returns to the industry.

A survey conducted by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, found that output and new order balances saw record increases of 30 per cent and 34 per cent respectively during the second quarter of 2010.

The rise has been attributed to increased demand for products both at home and from overseas purchasers.

Andrew Hawes, director and co-founder of specialist consultancy firm Newton, said that the demand for business has allowed many manufacturers to look to the future.

"There is confidence that we are not heading for doom and gloom," he commented.

"Companies are starting to look, now, as though they are planning for the future. They’re trying to get things going again and there is a lot of demand."

He went on to reveal that while the economic turndown had hindered some business expansion, there were firms in the manufacturing sector which saw growth of 30 per cent over the last year.
