Ireland’s food industry has been commended for helping consumers make healthier choices.
According to a survey from IBEC group Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII), 78 per cent of branded products now carry a Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) food label, Inside Ireland reports.
Although it is a voluntary system, the statistics also show that of those who have embraced the labelling method, 95 per cent of their products feature the GDA consumer information.
Paul Kelly, FDII director, told the news provider: "The food industry has made major progress in helping consumers make better informed choices on nutrition."
The GDA system has also been widely adopted in the UK, with most major food manufacturers using it as a means to inform customers about the nutritional value of a product.
However, the Food Standards Agency said earlier this year that the labelling was still too complex for some consumers to understand and called for a uniform system to be rolled out across the industry.
