The UK looks set to push through substantial investment in the biofuels sector after the government signed up to the EU Renewable Energy Directive.
One condition of Britain’s participation is that by 2020, at least 15 per cent of its energy used will be sourced from renewables.
This is the equivalent of a seven-fold increase in UK renewable energy consumption compared to 2008 levels, dubbed by Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) as "the most challenging of any EU Member State".
"Meeting the renewable energy targets is not just about preventing climate change and securing future energy supplies," the DECC said in a statement.
It claims that achieving the targets could provide £100 billion worth of investment opportunities and up to half a million jobs in the renewable energy sector over the next ten years.
The waste-to-energy market is also expected to benefit from the commitment, as generating power from municipal waste has become a major focus for the UK’s sustainable energy sector.
