Some two-thirds of consumers want genetically-modified (GM) produce to be banned from supermarket shelves, new research shows.
According to a study by gfk NOP, 66 per cent of families called for a guarantee from the food industry that their products will be GM-free.
Furthermore, 89 per cent of respondents said that food manufacturers and food processing firms should be required to clearly list any GM ingredients on their packaging.
Pete Riley, of campaign group GM Freeze, commented: "These results send a very clear message to government and retailers that any weakening of policies on the import and use of GM feed will not be welcomed by the public."
However, the study brought good news to food firms which do not use GM ingredients, as 72 per cent of people said they were prepared to pay more for food that was GM-free.
The results seem to support an increasing consumer trend for healthy, ethical foods, which has created unprecedented demand for British-grown produce.
