There needs to be a greater focus on the green sector in Britain, it has been claimed.
Hannah Hislop, senior policy adviser at Green Alliance, an independent organisation working to make environmental solutions a priority in British politics, said that addressing climate change is vital now more than ever.
In addition to safeguarding the future of the environment, developing Britain’s green capabilities, through investing in industries such as waste handling, sustainable energy and recycling, could lead to increased business for companies in the green market.
Ms Hislop stated that a "stronger government framework" would help support the creation of jobs, as well as acting to "up-skill people for growth areas, tackle fuel poverty and cut carbon emissions".
The waste-to-energy sector has become one of the UK’s biggest growth markets as the nation bids both to cut the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase its production of renewable energy.
The government’s stance on biofuels was further cemented recently when it joined the EU Renewable Energy Directive, with a view to achieve a 15 per cent target of renewable energy usage by 2020.
