A British bakery could soon be firing up the ovens in preparations for increased business after it picked up a top industry award.

Nantwich-based Chatwins was honoured with the title of Best Pasty at the highly-acclaimed British Pie Awards 2010, the Crewe Chronicle reports.

In fact, so prestigious is the accolade it requires a 60-storng judging panel in order to put the taste to the test, with food industry A-listers such as celebrity chef Phil Vickery and TV presenter Julia Bradbury sifting through the 750 contenders.

With more than 100 firms, including some corporate giants, present at the annual award show, Chatwins could benefit significantly from an extended customer base.

Picking up the prize, production manager Paul Mooney, said: "This is the top competition and it’s great to come away with this award," the news provider quoted him as saying.

Across the UK bakeries seems to be performing well, with many increasing their production capacity as a result.

National chains Greggs and Warburton’s have both recently reported substantial profits for the 2009 financial year, despite the wider economic downturn of this period.
