Proposals to implement a uniform traffic light food labelling system have been met with criticism by some members of the food industry.
Euro MPs are expected to vote on measures to create an EU-wide legislation that would see food produce colour coded in accordance with its health and nutritional status, with foods that are high components such as saturated fat, salt and sugar administered with a red rating.
However, while supporters claim it would make it easier for consumers to make informed choices, opponents have been left seeing red.
Many involved in the food manufacturing and food processing sectors believe it could drive their products out of the market and that diets need to be viewed in the context of a daily allowance and not on the basis of a single meal.
For example, an item such as chocolate could be given a red labelling, due to its high sugar and fat makeup. However, scientists have concluded that eaten in small doses chocolate can actually be good for a person’s health.
Whatever the result of the EU vote, Britain’s food manufacturers should be well placed to cope with the changes.
