The brewing industry could make significant cost savings by reducing water wastage, according to a new report.
Research firm Ethical Corporation has revealed that 52 per cent of sustainability managers cited ‘water stewardship’ as one of the most important issues to consider, reports cnet.com.
Andy Wales, head of sustainability for SABMiller, the brewing group which owns Miller, Foster’s, and Grolsch, claimed the firm are looking to make significant water savings.
He told Ethical Corporation: "Our internal target is to improve our water efficiency by 25 percent by 2015.
"At the moment, it takes us just under four and a half litres of water to make a litre of beer, which is better than the brewing industry average. But we need to go much further."
Wales confirmed the company are also helping farmers growing barley or hops to save water in areas where it is not widely available.
Sainsbury’s has saved £1.6 million since introducing a number of water savings initiatives, according to the report.
