The Beer Academy has revealed that beer actually contains a low-calorie content compared to a number of other alcoholic drinks, as well as having a range of health benefits.

A spokeswoman for the Academy said: "Beer contains vitamins which can help you to maintain a well-balanced healthy diet, fibre to keep you regular, readily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon which may help to lower your risk of osteoporosis."

Furthermore, the Academy found that many misconceptions still exist as ten per cent of respondents thought the drink contained fat and 13 per cent believed it was made using chemicals.

The findings could provide a welcome boost for brewers following increased sales as beer begins to shed its unhealthy tag.

Industry officials hope the new research could improve the image of beer and help it rival wine in the jostle for the ‘healthy choice’.
