A planned government review into waste management in the UK could boost the recycling industry.
The review will consider increasing the number of UK recycling facilities so rubbish is not processed aboard and that recyclable goods are more clearly labeled.
Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman claimed that Britain must stop putting recyclable and biodegradable rubbish in landfill sites and instead become a "zero-waste" society.
Ms Spelman said: "We cannot keep putting recyclable and biodegradable material into landfill. It threatens the environment and wastes what are incredibly valuable natural resources.
"We have an unprecedented opportunity to create the green jobs, green growth and take our share of the green jobs of the future."
The government will also consider introducing local reward schemes for those who recycle.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has recorded a 35 per cent increase in recycling rates after it handed out store vouchers as a reward for recycling.
