The UK food production industry is well placed to have a ‘bright future’, according to an expert.
Retail guru Peter Kendall expressed his belief that Britain will continue to be a world-leader in food production as the planet’s population swells.
The increased demand will mean food production must increase by at least 70 per cent in the next 40 years and many countries will struggle to cope with the effect that global warming has on the industry.
He wrote in The Independent: "British agriculture has a bright future. We have a good structure and a history of innovation, and the UK seems likely to be less affected by global warming."
It is good news for the food machinery market, as the growing need for food will result in food processing firms requiring more equipment.
Mr Kendall also praised the Common Agricultural Policy, which allows farmers to focus on the market and guarantees a minimum price for food.
