Britons would recycle more waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) following the introduction of kerbside collections, it has been claimed

Dean Overton, managing director of WEEE reprocessor Overton Recycling, claimed the public would be more likely to recycle this type of waste if it was more convenient.

"Local authorities seem to be pretty well signed up to it but the general public, that’s where the major amount of work needs to be done. Public awareness will really kick in once we bring in kerbside collection," he told letsrecycle.com.

Increased recycling collections would be a huge boost to the recycling industry as more equipment would be needed to deal with the growing amount of waste.

The European Commission recently proposed that 65 per cent of all WEEE should be recycled by 2016.

However, the European Parliament has suggested that this figure should rise to 85 per cent in the same timeframe.
