The Scottish food and drink industry has been boosted by the news that brand sales have increased significantly over the past three years.

Industry revenue has increased from £1.4 billion to £1.83 billion between May 2007 and the same month this year, according to the Scottish government.

Increased demand for food and drink brands will mean production will continue to rise accordingly.

Richard Lochhead, rural affairs and environment secretary, praised firms for reporting such figures during the recession.

He told business7.co.uk: "Sales of Scottish food and drink are soaring on shop shelves across Scotland, England and Wales as consumers flock to the Saltire."

In further good news for the sector, it was announced that £4.2million worth of grants will be awarded as part of the Food Processing, Marketing and Co-Operative scheme.

Firms will be given funds to continue to improve innovation and product development.
