The bio-fuel industry stands to profit from the EU renewable energy directive, it has been claimed.

Pekka Pesonen, secretary-general for European farmer’s organisation Copa-Cogeca, said that the bio-fuel market is well-placed to benefit from the drive towards low-carbon emissions, reports the Scotsman.

The move towards sustainable energy could mean that production of bio-fuels will begin to increase.

Mr Pesonen told the website: "On top of boosting employment, EU bio-fuels production will have an additional benefit through helping reduce our imports and dependence on imported protein crops from non-EU countries."

Firms producing bio-ethanol from a blend of grain or sugar and petrol and bio-diesel fuels from oilseed can earn additional income from their increased use.

Between 2004 and 2009, seven million more tonnes of rapeseed and an extra three billion litres of ethanol have been produced.
