A US firm will provide maintenance and operational support to a South London waste-to-energy plant.

Industry giant Wheelabrator Technologies will help run the Cory Environmental Riverside Resource Recovery facility when it opens in May 2011.

The £360 million development is expected to process 585,000 tonnes of residual waste a year from the City of London and surrounding boroughs.

The new site will increase demand for recycling machinery as the plant will be able to handle such high-volumes of waste.

Gary Aguinaga, UK operations vice president at Wheelabrator, expressed his belief that the move would be a success for all parties involved.

He said: "The depth of our 35-year energy-from-waste plant operating experience is in the US and our long-term technology partnership with AE&E Inova, give us an excellent foundation to support Cory Environmental in delivering best practice and operational excellence at the Riverside project."
