A new £52 million biofuel plant is set to be constructed in the north-east of England.

INEOS Bio will build the waste-to-bioethanol facility at their Seal Sands site in the Tees Valley following the receipt of a £7.3 million government grant.

The new factory will be able to annually process 100,000 tonnes of waste into 24,000 tonnes of biofuel and three megawatts of renewable electricity.

Following its construction, demand for biofuel machinery will increase in order to cope with high production levels.

Peter Williams, chief executive officer of INEOS Bio, said: "Using our technology, the waste that is collected from homes and offices and otherwise thrown away, can be recycled into clean biofuel for cars and renewable electricity for homes and industry."

The new plant will help the UK reach its renewable energy target in 2020, while there are also plans to expand the site into a larger biorefinery in 2015.
