Construction has begun on a new £25 million biofuel research block at Nottingham University.

The Bioenergy Centre will provide a host of laboratory and research facilities to assist the bioenergy and biofuel industries, as well as the brewing, food and drink sectors, reports clickgreen.com.

It will help firms to develop different methods for the manufacturing of alternatives to petrol and diesel fuels, thereby increasing production levels of biofuels.

Professor David Greenaway, vice-chancellor of the University, told the website: “This new Centre with its cutting edge facilities will enable the University to bring together many of the world’s leading experts in this field and help us tackle some of the major challenges of harnessing power from sustainable sources.”

A £2 million brewing research facility will also be opened at the site which will attempt to improve energy conservation.

Firms which optimise the fermentation process can reduce the amount of energy required while maintaining beer standards.
