The biomass industry has continued to grow as more wood gets diverted from landfills to recycling plants, it has been revealed.

The Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA) has found that 495,000 tonnes of waste wood was used for biomass in 2009 – an increase of 33 per cent compared to last year.

Biomass now accounts for around a quarter of all the wood recovered in the UK, while the majority of exported waste wood is now earmarked for biomass plants, reports letsreycle.com.

WRA chairman Clem Spencer told the website: “The rapid growth in biomass grade is perhaps even greater than we had anticipated at this stage.

“The real surge lies ahead, as more large installations come online. Until that happens, we are exporting to divert surpluses away from landfill.”

Furthermore, the proportion of recovered wood sent to panel board manufacturers dropped five per cent to 1,065,000 tonnes.
