The increased worldwide demand for Hereford cattle will be welcomed by the animal feed industry.
The international appeal of the product was highlighted at last week’s European Hereford Conference, in which a New Zealand member outlined the popularity of native cattle, reports farminguk.com.
The Hereford breed had recently been won the best retail brand award at the prestigious Steak of Origin ceremony.
The news will be welcomed by animal feed officials, as demand for beef will lead to increased animal feed production.
Robin Irvine, Chairman of the UK’s Hereford Cattle Society, outlined the importance of a new scheme which offers farmers who rear pure or cross-bred Hereford calves between £5 and £500 per calf.
He told the website: “This is an investment by our society and is intended to highlight the real potential of high performance Hereford-sired progeny.”
