Government ministers have met to discuss the adoption of anaerobic digestion with industry officials.

The technology can help create electricity, heat and biofuel from waste and is widely considered to be one of the most efficient forms of renewable energy.

Guests to the event were asked how the new coalition could implement such waste-to-energy solutions in a cost-effective way.

Energy minister Greg Barker claimed anaerobic digestion is the future of UK energy.

He said: “Turning waste into something usable is a no-brainer. So I want to investigate how we can be far more ambitious in our use of anaerobic digestion.”

Mr Barker also said the technology could help cut carbon emissions, ensure the nation has a long-lasting energy solution and create green jobs.

The UK could create seven per cent of the renewable energy required to meet the government’s 2020 targets if anaerobic digestion was deployed on a large-scale.

Around 100 million tonnes of organic waste is produced in Britain every year.
