The waste-to-energy industry could benefit from new energy proposals by energy minister Chris Huhne.

He outlined his plans to allow local councils to sell renewable energy generated from waste.

The 1976 Local Government Act prevents local authorities from selling renewable electricity which is created independent of heat.

Mr Huhne claimed councils could save millions of pounds by generating energy in a more efficient manner.

He said: “I want to see this repealed and by the end of the year I hope local authorities will be able to sell electricity from renewables – generating revenue to help local services and keep Council Tax down.”

Demand for waste-to-energy machinery could increase as local authorities would invest in the technology, such as anaerobic digestion.
