The introduction of a new strategy for Wales’ wine, beer and cider sectors could boost the flagging industries, it has been claimed.
A report by the National Assembly’s Rural Development Sub-Committee outlined the need for government expertise and a dedicated market strategy.
It calls for more assistance to be given to those entering the industry such as providing clearer guidelines to farmers planning to grow crops for the brewing sector or apples for cider makers.
Committee chair Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM, claimed the creation of a dedicated strategy could be a huge success.
He said: “This, along with more effective cooperation and support for people involved in or wishing to enter the industry could result in Wales becoming a key player in this important sector.”
The report highlights New Zealand’s successful wine industry as a good example of what can be achieved.
