Beef farmers have been boosted by the news that Asda will pay a contracted price for stock.

Asda BeefLink member farmers who provide goods to the supermarket giant via Dawn Meats’ Cardington abattoir will be paid £2.70 per kg, while there are also provisions to help guard against price fluctuation.

Should the price of beef fall dramatically, Asda will absorb half the cost, so if the market value is £2.50 per kg, farmers will receive £2.60.

Asda senior beef buyer Jim Viggars claimed farmers would benefit from the new deal.

He said: “Asda is committed to supporting the UK red meat sector and this move is one in a series of initiatives enabling beef farmers to plan for a profitable, stable and sustainable future.”

The news will be welcomed by the animal feed industry as increased beef production will boost the demand for feed.
