The first UK anaerobic digestion plant to use brewery and local food waste has been completed.

Adnams Bio Energy Limited and British Gas have teamed up to build the facility which will turn waste into gas for the National grid and for vehicle fuel.

It will generate up to 4.8 million kilowatt-hours per year and is expected to be able to power Adnams brewery and its lorries, while still injecting 60 per cent of gas into the National Grid.

The move highlights the growing popularity of waste-to-energy solutions, as the government seeks to cut down carbon emissions and reduce the amount of landfill waste.

Gearoid Lane, managing director of communities and new energy at British Gas, claimed the move would be welcomed by all.

He said: “This project demonstrates how local communities can help us move to a low carbon energy future. Using waste that would otherwise end up in landfill to produce renewable gas is mutually beneficial for the environment and homes and businesses.”

The National Grid claimed biomethane could account for around 15 per cent of domestic gas consumption by 2020.
