Boris Johnson has announced the launch of a new London-wide recycling network aimed at cutting back on levels of household waste across the capital.

Celebrating the start of the eco-friendly venture, the city’s mayor joined veteran actress Joanna Lumley in outlining plans to provide £8 million in City Hall funding in a bid to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

Specifically, the new venture will see the London Waste and Recycling Board work to bring together a number of smaller charities and local authorities, with these to then work together to establish reuse workshops across the city and encourage residents to do adopt a greener lifestyle.

Mr Johnson stated: “This funding is really welcome news, helping to create a service for Londoners to do exactly that and help to slash the mountain of waste being sent unnecessarily to landfill and cut the heavy economic costs of doing so.”

It is estimated that the new project will reduce London’s carbon footprint by 80,000 tonnes over the first two years alone.

This comes as the Oxford Times has reported that a new £600,000 recycling scheme is set to be rolled out across the city over the coming weeks.
