Rochford district council is set to be named as the top recycling council in the UK, according to a new survey.

Letsrecycle.com has found that the Essex-based local authority recycled around 65 per cent of all waste, an increase of 16 per cent compared to last year.

The figures, which include composting rates, will be good news for the recycling industry as demand for machinery increases in the region.

A council spokeswoman told the website: “We were previously collecting glass, cans and newspapers and then we included cardboard and plastics and food waste, as well as garden waste.

“We introduced a three-bin system and changed collection frequency and we really, really promoted it.”

Rochford is aiming to improve its recycling scheme further by introducing textile collections and collecting waste from more flats in the area.

The results still have to be confirmed by government agencies and Defra before they are official.

Typical Guttridge equipment used in the waste recycling includes; elevators – bucket elevators – valves
