Recycling firms in Bristol will welcome the news that the local council is aiming to increase recycling rates in the area.
Bristol city council is looking for a company to take up a seven year waste and recycling contract worth at least £80million, with the possibility of a further seven years available.
Gary Hopkins, executive member for strategic transport, waste and targeted improvement, outlined the council’s plan.
He said: “We need to move to a 50 per cent recycling rate which we aim to achieve as quickly as we can and also continue waste reduction.
“So these are the two most important factors in terms of getting a new contractor to takeover our system.”
The firm which wins the lucrative deal will be required to process household waste, dry recyclables and green waste, as well as expand the current kerbside collection programme.
Increased recycling rates could lead to an increase in the demand for industry machinery in the region.
