A US firm has unveiled plans for a new 49MW renewable energy plant in Stockton-on-Tees.
Air Products has submitted proposals to the local council for an advanced gasification facility which will generate electricity for up to 50,000 homes in the North East.
The site will convert 350,000 tonnes household, commercial and industrial waste per year into renewable power.
Should the application be accepted, demand for industry-related machinery could also rise.
Ian Williamson, European hydrogen and bio energy director at Air Products, claimed the firm is committed to seeking the approval of local residents.
He said: “We will be hosting drop-in sessions for local people over the coming months to explain the need for the project, the environmental merits of using the latest technologies and also the economic benefits to Teesside.”
The scheme will create up to 50 permanent jobs and up to 700 temporary roles during its three-year construction period.
