The recycling industry in Middlesbrough is processing more waste than ever before following a new partnership between a waste service firm and the local council.
More than 350 tonnes of recycling was collected during the first four weeks of the deal between Middlesbrough Council and Biffa Waste Services.
In April, plastic collections were extended across the town as residents could recycle ice cream tubs, yoghurt pots and food trays for the first time.
Moreover, cardboard, juice cartons and household batteries can now also be collected at the kerbside.
Paul Thompson, executive councillor for Streetscene Services, thanked residents and those involved in the project for their support.
He said: “People are more aware than ever of the importance of recycling, and we are committed as a council to providing a service which makes that as easy and accessible as possible.”
The rising figures will be welcomed by regional industry officials, who could look to purchase more machinery to process waste.
