The recycling industry in North Yorkshire could be boosted by a campaign to improve recycling rates in the area.
Harrogate District Friends of the Earth (FoE) have launched a petition to increase recycling figures in the town of Knaresborough, reports knaresboroughpost.co.uk.
The news provider found that the district was recycling and composting just 31 per cent of household waste in 2009, with rates predicted to drop even further this year.
Grant Blakemore, from the local FoE, told the website: “Harrogate Council is making progress in improving recycling, but if they want to make a significant improvement then they are going to have to make substantial changes in how we recycle.”
The group are lobbying for an extension of its kerbside collection scheme to include cardboard and plastic, in addition to current materials such as tins and garden waste.
FoE also hope the local council will implement alternate weekly rubbish and recycling collections of recycling and bins and promote home composting.
The campaign could help increase recycling rates and demand for machinery.
