The recycling industry in London could be set for a boost following the launch of an investigation into recycling rates in the city.
London Assembly’s environment committee will look at how current recycling methods can be improved after it was labelled the worst performing region in England.
The 33 boroughs of the capital only recorded a recycling and composting rate of 29 per cent in 2008/2009.
Assembly Member Gareth Bacon, who is heading the investigation, claimed recycling is an important issue.
“Waste is a resource that we should be using to our economic and environmental advantage. Understanding the challenges and barriers to recycling will help us to do that,” he said.
Increased pressure to improve recycling rates in London, especially in areas such as Newham where only 15.4 per cent of waste was recycled, could increase demand for industry-related machinery.
The probe will look at how waste is currently managed, the financial drivers to promote recycling and how residents’ attitudes can determine the amount of recycling.
