Plans for a waste-to-energy plant in Wales have initially been approved by the Environment Agency.

The £150 million facility in Cardiff will be able to convert 350,000 tonnes of waste a year into enough energy to power 50,000 homes.

Graham Hillier, from Environment Agency Wales, claimed the plans should go ahead following numerous safety checks that have taken place over the past 13 months.

He said: “At this stage we do not anticipate that the facility will cause any significant risk to the health of people who live nearby, or to the environment.”

The news will be welcomed by recycling officials in the area as demand for machinery looks set to rise following the construction of the site.

Furthermore, around 1,500 jobs will be created at the processing facility, which will be located in the city’s Trident Park.

Viridor Waste Management will run the project should proposals be accepted at a final hearing.
