Sainsbury’s has launched a new in-store mobile phone recycling scheme which could increase processing rates.

The firm has teamed up with environmental consultancy company Valpak to recycle the devices across a four-week period between July 31st and August 28th.

Currently, only 280,000 chargers are recycled each year and Sainsbury’s is aiming to boost rates by 50 per cent by collecting 150,000 throughout the campaign.

All of the waste will then be sent to a recycling facility in Northamptonshire where the plastics and metals will be separated and processed.

Neil Sachdev, Sainsbury’s property director, claimed many consumers are unaware they can recycle their chargers at local centres.

He said: “By running this campaign, we hope to raise awareness of charger recycling facilities, while at the same time preventing nearly 40 tonnes of waste from going to landfill.”

Should the initiative prove to be successful, Sainsbury’s could aim to reintroduce it on a long-term basis.
