recycling rates in England have increased in a welcome boost for the industry.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has revealed that recycling rates for the whole of 2009 reached 39.3 per cent, compared to 37.6 per cent for the 12 months to March 2009.

Less waste was sent to the landfill in 2009, with 12.7 million tonnes of municipal waste disposed of in this way, compared to 13.8 million tonnes for the 2008/09 financial year.

The boost in rates is sure to be welcomed by industry officials as more waste is processed at recycling facilities and demand for machinery rises.

The energy-from-waste sector also recorded rapid growth, with 16 per cent (987,000 tonnes) of municipal waste being converted into energy for the fourth quarter of 2009.

It represents a large increase on previous figures from the past three years, which showed rates were consistently held at around 13 per cent.

Defra will publish the recycling rates for the first quarter of 2010 in November.
