eadquarters is set to use anaerobic digestion (AD) to convert leftover food into energy, it has been revealed.

The supermarket giant will launch the scheme in its head office in Bracknell, which uses micro-organisms to convert waste into methane, reports getreading.co.uk.

This methane is used to create heat and electricity and is then sent to the National Grid to be used as power by UK consumers.

AD has become increasingly popular among firms and this could lead to an increase in the uptake of industry-related machinery.

Mike Walters, recycling and waste operations manager for Waitrose, claimed the company can provide an example for food disposal to its customers and partners.

He told the news provider: “AD has proved to be a sustainable way of eliminating the need to send our food waste to landfill, reducing our impact on the environment and creating renewable energy along the way.”

Waitrose already uses AD in around half of its UK stores.
