The future of a quarry in Staffordshire is to be considered by local authorities in the coming days as they look at proposals to extend its life.

Staffordshire County Council will’s planning committee will be responsible for ruling whether or not the Uttoxeter Quarry will remain open for a further seven years until 2020.

Situated near Spath, the quarry could also be extended in a moth that would allow it to extract a further three million tonnes of sand and gravel, the Uttoxeter Advertiser reports.

Such a move could see increased demand for conveyor belts at the site, which is run by Aggregate Industries UK.

As part of the proposals, the company has also unveiled an ambitious legacy plan that would involve the restoration of the area and large bodies of water.

Geoff Morrison, a representative of Uttoxeter Town on the county council, told the news provider: “I am anxiously waiting to see that the extension does not detract from the promises of the leisure park that were made.

“It is essential for the environment and employment that they carry out their original plans to restore the quarry site.”

A number of small and medium-sized quarries are operated in and around Staffordshire.
