Tesco has continued its policy of recycling following its decision to renew its contract with a French firm.
Norbert Dentressangle will remain in charge of 12 recycling service units throughout the UK and Ireland for the supermarket giant.
The units process all loose equipment and packaging, including trays, flower buckets and roll cages, from more than 2,000 stores.
Since the introduction of the units in 1995, around 225 million trays and flower buckets are recycled each year, as well as 300,000 tonnes of card and plastic.
The contract renewal is good news for the industry as Tesco recycles on such a large scale.
In 2008, the recycling units processed almost 80 per cent of the total amount of waste produced by Tesco in the UK.
The firm currently recycles around 400,000 tonnes of waste a year, and is aiming to divert 95 per cent of waste from landfill.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the recycling industry includes; conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
