Recycling rates could be set to rise in Sandwell following the expected award of a new £650 million waste processing and recycling contract.
The West Midlands-based borough council is likely to choose a consortium headed by services firm Serco to run household waste and recycling collections.
Organic specialists Jack Moody, Pure Recycling and the Coventry & Solihull Waste Disposal Company will assist Serco in operations.
The new contract will help Sandwell achieve its target of recycling 60 per cent of all waste by 2020 – which would be welcomed by those in the industry.
Derek Rowley, cabinet member for safer neighbourhoods, said: "Waste services in Sandwell have needed to be modernised for some time and this contract means within a few years we will be delivering one of the best services in the country which is exactly what the borough's residents deserve."
The council plans to implement a number of initiatives to further increase recycling rates, including the introduction of more recycling bins.
