A new initiative is set to be launched in Camden which could significantly boost food waste recycling rates.

The local council has begun to offer food waste collections to all households in the area after trialling the system at the end of last year.

Officials from the council claim the collections will be rolled out to every household by the summer of 2011.

A council spokesman told letsrecycle.com: "It is the intention to roll it out to every household, obviously there are going to be some that cannot take the service for some reason but we aim to cover as many as we can."

Flats will be issued with 25 litre food caddies in which to dump their waste which will be processed at the LondonWaste composting plant in North London.

The new service will help Camden council achieve its target recycling rate of 45 per cent by 2015, with current figures just below 30 per cent.

The local authority currently has a long term waste and recycling contract with Veolia Environmental Services.
