A new initiative is set to be launched in Cheshire which could significantly boost recycling rates in the area.

Halton borough council is set to roll-out the RecyleBank scheme, which rewards residents for recycling, across the area on August 23rd following a six-month trial.

The programme offers consumers up to £135 worth of vouchers and discounts which can be used in local shops.

The incentive scheme could see recycling rates increase in the region, which could in turn increase demand for industry-related machinery.

Sue Igoe, managing director of RecycleBank, claimed a further 25 councils are interested in the project.

She told letsrecycle.com: "We feel, from there, there are around 25 more in the pipeline for the next six to 12 months. There is a lot of interest and it is great."

Although there are a number of set-up costs associated with the scheme, Halton estimates it will save £84,000 in landfill disposal costs if recycling rates increase by 20 per cent in 2010/11.

The scheme is already available in the borough of Windsor and Maidenhead following its launch in June.
