British farmers have been urged to maintain and develop their production of grain as foreign exports diminish.

The extreme drought in Russia and the Ukraine has wiped out crop supplies in both countries and severely restricted exports into the UK.

Furthermore, severe rainfall in Canada has eliminated much of its wheat crop, resulting in calls from the National Farmers Union (NFU) to boost UK supplies.

Ian Backhouse, NFU combinable crops board chairman, claimed that European Union (EU) farmers have a responsibility to produce food for global consumption.

He said: "It's impossible to speculate on the impact this dramatic market movement will have.

"But what this does serve to show is how important it is to maintain and develop our own productive capacity in grain, faced with unpredictable supply from overseas."

The calls could lead to an increased uptake of industry-related machinery as food production levels rise.
