A London borough council is planning to increase its recycling rates with a complete overhaul of its waste management system.

Brent council is looking to recycle 60 per cent of all waste by 2020 and has unveiled plans to include 15,000 more flats and all the area's houses in the recycling scheme.

Currently, only a limited number of flats have access to recycling facilities so the new proposals could significantly boost rates and demand for industry-related machinery.

Michael Read, assistant director of environment and culture at Brent council, claimed residents will have more space to recycle in the future as larger bins will be introduced.

He said: "We want to get opinions on everything from ease of access to the type of material collected. Under the new proposals there will be very little of what we might have called 'rubbish' as most of what we throw away can be recycled."

Brent council has identified annual savings of £1.2 million in its new waste management programme with new initiatives such as switching from weekly to fortnightly waste collections.

The council aims to introduce the new changes over the next 12 months and plans to have the service operational by July 2011.
