Local authorities should be faced with less bureaucracy when providing waste processing data, it has been claimed.
Currently, councils are required to regularly submit information to the Environment Agency's WasteDataFlow database.
The online system was introduced in 2004 to help monitor waste processing rates and it has now been criticised for taking a long time to complete.
Dr Andrew Poveyeader, leader of Surrey county council, revealed each waste authority has to enter data into the WasteDataFlow database on a quarterly basis.
He told letsrecycle.com: "I am disturbed by the amount of time this takes across the country. A review of the system, aimed at reducing the level of detail required would be helpful."
A review of the system could boost the waste industry as authorities would have more time to concentrate on improving processing rates.
His comments are in response to a request from the department of communities and local government for councils to suggest ways bureaucracy can be limited.
