Two UK councils have launched a new initiative in a bid to improve metal recycling rates.
Warwickshire-based Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council and East Hampshire district council have both introduced the 'metalmatters' scheme.
The project aims to improve residents' awareness of the fact they can recycle metal products such as drinks cans and packaging in their area.
It is being funded by the trade body Beverage Can Makers Europe, aluminium can recycling company Novelis and Corus Steel Packaging Recycling.
Bill Shepherd, a councillor for Nuneaton and Bedworth, claimed the programme highlights how the industry can help support local authorities in their aim to boost recycling rates.
"We see this as an important opportunity to help drive up recycling rates in our local community," he said.
Both councils will promote the scheme through leaflet and poster campaigns, displays in local shopping centres and a consumer information roadshow.
Currently, around 95 per cent of local authorities collect metal although many residents are unaware of this.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the recycling industry includes; Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
