ould consider installing their own grain storage facilities, it has been claimed.

Richard Guinness, an Australian farmer who grows wheat, barley and canola in the western region of the country, has installed ten silos to store his own crops.

He told farmonline.com.au: "On-farm storage is great for keeping the harvester moving, because you don't have to take the time to truck the grain into town.

"As I see it, the main benefit is quality control at the time of harvest. You can lose a lot of money if grain falls outside the specifications, and being able to blend it before delivery is worth the extra handling."

Mr Guinness advised farmers who are considering installing their own silos to ensure they are equipped with the latest aeration and fumigation technology.

Furthermore, there should be room for expansion and multiple silos could be required to segregate different crops at harvest, he added.
